Ruff Weather Dog Door: Review
Designed as an insulated, energy efficient dog door for hot and cold weather
The system works by having two flaps, and an air pocket of 3 inches thick between the flaps as an insulator
It is for installation to regular exterior house doors
There’s also an additional and options wall tunnel kit you can purchase that increases the air pocket to up to 9 inches – it also allows you to install the door on walls instead of doors
Has a telescoping inner frame that can adjust between 3/4 of an inch to 1 and 3/4 of an inch in depth
Door can be installed on walls from 4 3/4 inch to 7 1/4 inch deep when bought with the wall kit
The door is made from structural foam molded plastic with clear vinyl insulated flaps
Comes in 4 sizes from Small through to Super Large
Super Large is for dogs up to 120lbs
Super Large has a flap size of 15 inches wide by 23.5 inches tall
Flaps have a magnetic seal
The flaps can sometimes not seal properly when they come back down – perhaps because of the magnetic strips not connecting properly, and the frame not being flush with the flaps
The screws could be better quality – they can strip easy and aren’t super thick
Installation can be a little annoying – the screw holes may not line up. It can take a little bit of time and modifying to get the door in completely flush and working as you like
In cold weather, the flaps seem to go quite stiff instead of being floppy
For super small sausage type dogs, they may struggle slightly getting over the bottom frame of the dog door
Overall, for the price this is a good insulated dog door for cold or hot weather, despite a few little drawbacks

How Do You Install This Pet Door?
There’s no substitute for following the manufacturer’s instructions for installing their Pet Door product which should come with the door, or should be found on their website. They may also have YouTube videos to help you.
But generally, for most Pet Doors you need to cut out a section of the door or wall, insert and fix a frame or tunnel extender into the wall or door, and then fix the door onto the frame.
This may involve using a jigsaw or cutting tool, a drill, a screwdriver (can be phillips head or sometimes a non standard screw is included in the kit so check this), and the hardware included in the pet door kit.
Sliding doors and aluminium frame installs are generally easier as there’s usually no cutting, but just rather inserting and sometimes fixing involved.
Some people choose to install themselves, whilst some people choose to get a professional handyperson to do it for them.
